The Highway Code Oddities
The Highway Code was first published in 1931 and is updated every few years. It is aimed at UK road users – vehicles, motorcycles & scooters, cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians with its content of rules, advice and guides to keep everyone safe on or near he roads. Ideally, all users should update their knowledge regularly but this isa rare occurrence. The majority of drivers once passed their test, never look at the Highway Code book again.
There are some rules that most road users would be either surprised at, was not aware of the distances involved or just did not know. We have listed the lesser known ones.
Rule 243
Do not stop or park near a school entrance, anywhere you would prevent access for Emergency Services. at or near a bus or tram stop or taxi rank. on the approach to a level crossing/tramway crossing. opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space.
Comment: How many of you knew the junction distance was 10 metres? How many vehicles do you see have broken this rule ? Look at the school entrance when the school runs are active!
Rule 248
You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space.
Comment: How many owners re-park their vehicles at night if facing the working way?
